1. The short version

HY-1000 is a precisely fractionated low-molecular-weight polyethylene oligomer positioned in the same slot as Mitsui Hi-WAX 100P / HP10A and between Honeywell A-C 8A and A-C 9A in hardness. It is a non-polar, unoxidised, high-crystallinity grade. If your current grade is an unoxidised homopolymer PE wax at Mn ≈ 1000, HY-1000 is a realistic drop-in candidate — subject to the validation steps in section 4.

Reading the table correctly. HY-1000's melt viscosity sits close to Hi-WAX 100P (both are very low), which matters most for pigment wetting and lubrication. The A-C 8A/9A grades are quoted at several hundred cps because Honeywell's homopolymer grades in that hardness band are higher-molecular products. If your process depends on the very low viscosity of Hi-WAX 100P, compare against HY-1000 rather than against A-C 8A.

Hi-WAX is produced by direct polymerisation over a Ziegler catalyst. HY-1000 is recovered as a precisely fractionated oligomer cut. The practical difference for you:

4. Six-step drop-in substitution checklist

  1. Confirm the grade family. Unoxidised homopolymer PE wax only. If you are currently using an oxidised grade (A-C 629/680, Licowax, HY-OPE series), HY-1000 is not a substitute — see PE Wax vs Oxidised PE Wax.
  2. Match the form factor. Prill/flake for melt compounding; micronised D50 5–8 µm for inks and coatings; D50 15–25 µm for masterbatch and rubber chemicals. Request the particle-size distribution, not just the D50.
  3. Run DSC and melt viscosity. Compare melting peak, onset and 140 °C viscosity against your incumbent on the same instrument. Differences under 3 °C and within the viscosity band usually mean no process change is needed.
  4. Bench test at equal loading. For masterbatch: filter pressure rise, colour strength and gloss. For PVC: torque, output rate and surface finish. For powder coatings: degassing behaviour, gloss, and ΔE against your standard panel.
  5. Check the compliance documents. REACH status, RoHS, and — for food contact — the FDA 21 CFR 178.3710 statement. Ask for these before the trial, not after.
  6. Validate three consecutive lots. Batch consistency is the real test of a second source. One good lot proves nothing.

Is HY-1000 a true drop-in replacement for Hi-WAX 100P?

It is a candidate drop-in for unoxidised homopolymer PE wax at Mn ≈ 1000. The melting point, penetration hardness and melt viscosity should be confirmed against your incumbent on your own instruments, and validated across three consecutive production lots, before switching.

Which Honeywell grade does HY-1000 correspond to?

In hardness it falls between A-C 8A (1.0 dmm) and A-C 9A (0.5 dmm). Note that those grades are quoted at much higher melt viscosity (450 cps at 140 °C) than Hi-WAX 100P, so the closer functional match for low-viscosity applications is Hi-WAX 100P rather than the A-C 8/9 series.

Can HY-1000 replace an oxidised PE wax such as A-C 629 or A-C 680?

No. Oxidised grades carry an acid value of about 15 mg KOH/g, which gives PVC compatibility and emulsifiability. HY-1000 has no acid value and is strictly an external lubricant for non-polar systems.
